There must be a better word than "merely" we can use. In ordinary English, "merely" means "only", and that doesn't work with our use of it. Consider : X and Y are equivalent if we only construct an equivalence between them.

The mere thought of it makes me shudder, speak not of the discomfort I’d experience were I forced to utter such sentences myself. ‘Mere possession’ can indicate lack of control, but does not say anything about whether it is my one and only possession.
