There is also a Windows 10/11 Store version (32-bit) that, once installed, can update to newer versions via the "Library" menu of Windows Store app.

The default document shown when app first launches (or with New button) contains a link to the Tortoise and the Hare Aesop fable story to try.

Alternatively:

• can try downloading manually and opening that story for testing (right click the link and select to Save As a .readcom file - to use that story's URL in URLActions of StoryItems right click the URL and select Copy, then right-click and Paste in the URLAction editbox at the popup dialog of the ActiveStoryItem in the app).
• can download the whole Gallery in a .ZIP file (extract its Gallery subfolder somewhere on your PC) and load that sample story from the "Stories/Aesop Fables" folder, per the instructions found at https://github.com/Zoomicon/READCOM_Gallery/. The Gallery also contains useful media assets of permissive license at "Assets" subfolder to add to your stories

The .exe file is compiled for 32-bit Windows (runs on 64-bit Windows too, but for 64-bit you could also download the x64 version that can use more memory)
The .upx.exe file is the same as the 32-bit one, but UPX-compressed (much smaller, might take an instant more to start up and may trigger antivirus false alerts)

For Windows machines with older graphics cards or older graphics drivers with no available driver updates, try holding down SHIFT key when running the application. This will use older Graphics Device Interface (GDI) instead of DirectX on Windows and mention "(Compatibility Mode") on the titlebar of the application.

Version 0.5.9 released with support for riddles (done via Tag matching):

When moveable and anchored (target) child items of the ActiveStoryItem have Tags set (via their Options pane shown with the Gear icon on the right Edit sidebar), they tagged moveables have to be moved over the tagged anchored ones (the targets) so that their tags match (only a single tag supported for now on each one). Else one can't proceed to next storypoint (and is asked to "solve the riddle"). Note that one can have more moveables than targets but not vice-versa, since all targets need to be matched to one or more moveables. Of course all moveables have to be matched to a single target each. Author can have fake targets by making some visual item that looks like a possible target (say a bucket) and not set a tag to it.
