My first SPFX webpart in SharePoint

Hi,

I am trying to build my first SharePoint SPFX webpart using React. Below is the old JavaScript I used on a previous version of SharePoint to call an api to get some data from an external source. Can anyone help me get this code into an SPFX SharePoint webpart. My attempts are not returning anything.
