I am an absolute Linux beginner, and this is a living document constantly updated with the new things I've learnt and done on my freshly installed ZorinOS to guide other new beginners to improve their Linux Installation.

You're encouraged to do these three things;

Get Started

Do the following on your computer;

Prerequisite
  • Backup your files in an external drive
  • Check system requirements & hardware compatibility here.
Install ZorinOS

Update Installations

After installation, update everything to the latest version through Zorin's GUI or copy the commands and run them in Terminal;

Before Updating
  • Go into the Software Store and click on Software & Updates.
  • Click on Other Software then turn on Canonical Partners.
  • A pop-up will appear. Click Close.
Update Through Terminal
  • sudo apt update + enter to check for updates
  • sudo apt upgrade + enter to apply the updates
  • Restart your computer

System Optimization

Settings to Improve performance, efficiency, and overall functions of your computer.

Intall Ubuntu Restricted Extras
  • This enables support for a wide range of multimedia formats and proprietary tools like audio and video codecs, Adobe Flash Plugin, Unrar and GStreamer Plugins on your computer
  • sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras + enter to install
Activate Zorin Connect
  • This app alloows you to connect your Zorin OS computer to your Android phone for file sharing, clipboard sharing, remote input and more
  • Zorin Connect is already pre-installed
  • On your Android device, download from Playstore
Install Windows App Support
  • This app lets you install and run various Windows applications directly on Zorin OS without needing a full Windows installation.
  • open the Zorin Menu → System Tools → Windows App Support.
  • Click Install
Connect Your Online Accounts
Improve Battery Life
  • TLP is a power management tool designed to optimize the battery life on your laptop.
  • sudo apt install tlp + enter to install
  • Restart your computer

ZorinOS comes with a built-in Software Store and here are packages with beautiful UIs that I use and recommend;
