This morning, the Minister of Health stated that Ontario has reported less than 100 new COVID-19 cases for two straight days In addition, the province says it is investing a total of $309 million into education for the fall, including the purchase of PPE, hiring of staff and custodians, public health nurses, and mental health supports.
As the Durham Region Health Department converted over to a new reporting system between July 31 and August 3, no daily numbers were reported. According to the new numbers released on Tuesday, there have been 16 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since Thursday. There are currently 21 active known cases in Durham Region.

The Ontario Government is announcing the safe reopening of schools for in-class instruction beginning this September. The plan unveiled by the government prioritizes the health and safety of staff and students, and provides school boards with unprecedented resources and support. Students in Grades 4 to 12 will be required to wear a non-medical face while at school, whereas younger children will be encouraged, but not required, to do the same. Elementary leve students and high schools in non-designated boards, which typically have smaller enrollment, will remain a single cohort offering full-time learning. Secondary students in the 24 "designated boards" will attend school on alternating days, in cohorts of approximately 15.

The Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged in Toronto's North York region will be temporarily run by Humber River Hospital following the death of 27 residents at the home and positive COVID-19 tests for another 16 residents and 5 staff.

As Ontario reports 12 new cases, Premier Doug Ford introduces new legislation enabling the government to extend certain pandemic emergency orders one month at a time, with the bill expiring one year after it's implemented. If the law passes, certain parts of the province could be moved back to earlier stages of the pandemic lockdown if required. Along with allowing regions to be rollbacked, the bill does not prohibit price gouging on essential goods, which is to expire next week.
