## How do I turn off Sync & Backup on one of my devices? | ||
You can think of this as “signing out” on one of your devices. Your synced data will remain on our server, and any other devices using Sync & Backup will not be affected. No data will be deleted locally. | ||
To turn off Sync & Backup on one of your devices: | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Select **Turn Off Sync & Backup...** | ||
1. Confirm your choice when prompted | ||
## How do I turn off Sync & Backup for good and delete all data on the server? | ||
To stop using Sync & Backup entirely: | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Select **Turn Off Sync and Delete Server Data...** | ||
1. Confirm your choice when prompted | ||
This will delete all your encrypted data from the DuckDuckGo server and will turn off Sync & Backup on all your synced devices. Your local data will not be deleted. |

## How do I enable Sync & Backup? | ||
If you’re syncing two devices: | ||
1. Make sure you have the DuckDuckGo browser installed on both devices | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser on each device | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Select **Sync With Another Device** | ||
1. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the two devices. If you’re syncing a phone or tablet and a computer: | ||
- You can use the mobile device to scan the QR code displayed on the computer | ||
- Otherwise, you can manually enter a code | ||
If you don’t have a second device: | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Select **Sync and Back Up This Device** | ||
1. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup | ||
1. Be sure to save your **Recovery Code** in a safe place | ||
## Do I have to provide my email address or any other personal information to use Sync & Backup? | ||
No. We designed Sync & Backup to work without any personal information from you. | ||
## Does it cost money to use Sync & Backup? | ||
No, it’s a free feature of the DuckDuckGo browser. | ||
## What if I have two devices, but neither of them has a camera? | ||
Scanning a QR code is not required to connect to devices. Instead, you can manually enter an alphanumeric code. | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser on one of your devices | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
- Desktop: select **Sync With Another Device** > **View Code** | ||
- Mobile: select **Sync With Another Device** > **Share Text Code** | ||
1. You’ll have several options for sending this code to your second device, such as email, text message, and notes app | ||
1. On the second device, go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
- Desktop: select **Enter Code** | ||
- Mobile: select **Manually Enter Code** | ||
1. Paste the text code from the first device |

title: Learn About DuckDuckGo Sync Recovery Codes & Troubleshooting Tips | ||
nav_title: Recovery Codes & Troubleshooting | ||
description: Sync bookmarks, passwords, and Email Protection settings between DuckDuckGo browsers on phones, tablets, and computers, privately and securely. | ||
category: DuckDuckGo Sync & Backup | ||
order: 500 | ||
--- | ||
## What is the Recovery Code? Why do I need it? | ||
Your Recovery Code is the only way to recover your synced data if you lose access to all the devices on which you have enabled DuckDuckGo Sync & Backup. It provides full, unencrypted access to all your data — so, first and foremost, make sure to keep the Recovery Code private and do not share it with anyone. | ||
While setting up Sync & Backup, you will be encouraged to save your Recovery Code. Copy and paste the code into a safe place, such as a password manager, and/or download a recovery PDF which includes both a QR code and the full Recovery Code text. | ||
## Why is it beneficial to setup Sync & Backup on more than one device? | ||
Setting up Sync & Backup on more than one device makes your bookmarks and passwords easily accessible on each of your devices. If one of your devices is lost or damaged, or if you’re setting up a new device, you can use the second device to recover previously synced data on your replacement device. | ||
## If I lose my device, how can I recover my data? | ||
To recover your data, you’ll either need your Recovery Code or another device with Sync & Backup already enabled. To recover your data using the Recovery Code: | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Select **Recover Synced Data** | ||
1. Follow the on-screen instructions, then either: | ||
- Scan the QR code | ||
- Enter the alphanumeric code from your recovery PDF | ||
To recover your data using a second device, follow the steps outlined in [Syncing New Devices]({{site.baseurl}}/sync-and-backup/syncing-new-devices) to add the new device to Sync & Backup. | ||
## I lost my device, lost my Recovery Code, and do not have Sync & Backup currently enabled on any of my other devices. Is there any way to recover my data? | ||
No, unfortunately not – that’s why it’s important to keep your Recovery Code in a safe place, and/or use Sync & Backup on multiple devices. Because Sync & Backup is end-to-end encrypted, DuckDuckGo does not have your Recovery Code and cannot provide access to your data in this scenario. |

## Where is my data stored? | ||
When you enable Sync & Backup, your data is encrypted right on your device. That encrypted data is uploaded to DuckDuckGo’s servers so it can stay in sync with your other devices. (Synced data can also be restored with your Recovery Code if you lose your device.) At no time can DuckDuckGo decrypt or access your data. | ||
## What does it mean to be end-to-end encrypted? | ||
When you enable Sync & Backup, a unique encryption key is generated locally on your device. A copy of this encryption key is saved on any other devices that you sync. It’s also stored within your Recovery Code, in case your devices are lost or damaged. | ||
End-to-end encryption means that your data is encrypted before it is uploaded to DuckDuckGo’s servers, and it’s only decrypted after it’s downloaded onto your other devices. In other words, it’s encrypted from one end (the first device) to the other end (a second device) and is only readable in plain text from your devices that contain the encryption key. | ||
DuckDuckGo does not have access to the encryption key and cannot read the data stored on our servers. Even if someone were to breach our servers and gain access to your data, it would remain encrypted, and they wouldn't be able to read it without your encryption key. | ||
## What specific data will be synced? | ||
Sync & Backup covers your bookmarks, passwords, and your Email Protection account. We expect to add more types of data over time. | ||
## Can I sync and back up only my bookmarks but not my passwords, or vice versa? | ||
Currently, Sync & Backup is an all-or-nothing feature. In the future, we expect to add the ability to sync certain data types but not others. | ||
## Is there a limit to the amount of data that I can sync? | ||
Yes, but it is a very high limit meant only to prevent abuse. We don’t expect anyone to hit this limit with regular usage. |

DuckDuckGo Sync & Backup is a free feature of the DuckDuckGo browser that allows you to privately sync and back up your bookmarks and passwords between devices. Synced data is end-to-end encrypted, so DuckDuckGo never has access to your synced data or encryption key. | ||

title: How To Sync Favorites & Bookmark Icons Across Devices in DuckDuckGo | ||
nav_title: Syncing Favorites | ||
description: Sync bookmarks, passwords, and Email Protection settings between DuckDuckGo browsers on phones, tablets, and computers, privately and securely. | ||
category: DuckDuckGo Sync & Backup | ||

## How are favorites different than bookmarks? | ||
The DuckDuckGo browser lets you mark certain bookmarks as a “favorites.” For quick access, favorited bookmarks are displayed in convenient locations, such as the New Tab page. Marking a bookmark as a favorite on one device type will not result in it being marked as a favorite on other devices by default, even if you’ve turned on Sync & Backup. | ||
## Can I keep the same favorites across all my devices? | ||
Yes, you can! If you want the same favorites displayed across all your devices, do this after you enable Sync & Backup: | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Turn on the **Unify Favorites Across Devices** setting | ||
1. You only need to turn on this setting on one of your devices to sync favorites across all of them | ||
If you want to keep your mobile and desktop favorites separate, leave this setting off. | ||
## I'd like my bookmarks and favorites to show the website’s icon, instead of placeholder letters. How can I get icons to show up for my synced bookmarks? | ||
Automatically downloading website icons (favicons) for synced bookmarks has privacy implications to consider, so this feature is available on an opt-in basis. To turn it on: | ||
1. Open the DuckDuckGo browser | ||
1. Go to **Settings** > **Sync & Backup** | ||
1. Turn on the **Auto-Download Icons** setting | ||
1. You will need to do this separately for each synced device. | ||
Please note that downloading bookmark icons from the web will expose knowledge of your bookmarks to your network, even if you don't visit the bookmark while connected to that network. Consider leaving this setting off if you connect to sensitive or shared networks (e.g., work, school, etc.) and do not want those networks to see your bookmarks. |
