Construction

The construction of Lawndon is very dependent on the mower you are making these modifications to, a few factors to consider:

  • Final height of the mower
  • Placement of the gearboxes
  • Length of tracks needed
  • Placement of pulley axles
  • Routing for internal components

For my example I used a 24V 14" Worx mower which did not lend much room for the gearboxes and internal components. I ended up making a wooden mount for the gearboxes that fit the mold of the mower which allowed the front axle to be placed outside the mower housing, and I cut two grooves in the back of the mower for the rear axle just behind the blade compartment.

Assembly

Components list:

  • 2X Gear housing (mirrored)
  • 2X Motor gear
  • 4X 40T gear
  • 2X 40T output gear
  • 2X Gearbox wraparound plate
  • 2X Big track pulley
  • 2X Small track pulley
  • 2X Board rod holder
  • 4X c-clips
  • Tracks (amount dependent on length of mower, 44 per side in my example)

Once the components have all been printed and axles cut to length, assembly can begin.

Gear Housing

Complete these steps for both gearboxes:

  1. Attach motor gear to brushless motor IMG_3940

  2. Attach motor to gear housing IMG_3941

  3. Prepare 40T and 40T output gears with axle and two washers IMG_3942

  4. Mount gears to housing IMG_3943

  5. Prepare 40T gear with axle and one washer IMG_3944

  6. Mount gear to housing IMG_3945

  7. Attach wraparound plate IMG_3946

Tracks

  1. Connect tracks with music wire IMG_3921

Mower chassis

  1. Prepare front chassis for mounting the gearboxes IMG_3947 IMG_3948 IMG_3949 IMG_3950

  2. Prepare rear chassis for rear axle mounting IMG_3951 IMG_3925

  3. Mount gearboxes to chassis with front axle and big track pulleys IMG_3927

  4. Secure front and rear pulleys with c-clips on axles (you can also use locking nuts if the axles have been threaded) IMG_3924

  5. Align tracks with both pulleys IMG_3922

  6. Connect tracks with music wire IMG_3923

Internal Components

The pin locations may be changed depending on circumstances, but definitions for each pin can be found in their respective header files.

  1. Mount ArduinoMega, Motorsheild, and motor controller - then connect the pins IMG_3952 IMG_3953 IMG_3954

Final Assembly

  1. Attach the cover IMG_3918
