How to edit tracks with JOSM
Probably the plugin public_transport is outdated and it does not generate proper output. See OSM mailinglist. Please follow this documentation instead.
JOSM [1] is an editor for OpenStreetMap. We use it to clean raw gpx data and to add OSM relations between routes and bus stops.
- Download this file
- Double click on the file
For more information on how JOSM works there is a simple guide here.
Now you need to install a plugin for public transport [2].
- Open JOSM
- Click on Preferences button (on the top toolbar)
- Click on Plug icon (on the left toolbar)
- Click on Download list
- Select public_transport
- Click on Update plugins
- Restart the application
In this section, we learn how to build a route relation for OSM. The main reference is this document.
The underlying idea is quite simple. JOSM downloads data from OSM about streets and we build a route adding street by street following previously collected gpx tracks as a guide.
NOTA BENE: save your work often because (at least my version of) JOSM sometimes crashes.
From toolbar select Open a File. Now you should see your tracks on a black background. Since we follow this track in order to build routes, it is useful to change its color and thickness so that we can see it easily on a map: right click on gpx track in Layer Panel, choose Customize Color and Customize Track Drawing (see below my conf).
InfoMode plugin is useful to display timestamps on trackpoints. Sometimes it is difficult to understand track direction. I found this plugin quite handy to understand the direction. Actually, I do not know if there are better options.
From toolbar select Imagery > OpenStreetMap (Mapnik)
From toolbar select Download data from OSM server. Data about streets and buildings are downloaded from OSM. We are interested in streets, of course. Following our GPX tracks we have to add streets in order to build our route.
NOTE: you are allowed to download just a limited quantity of data from OSM. When you click on Download button you should select a small area.
- If a [gap] is inserted, probably it is wrong the role of the piece of itinerary. Set it as backward or forward as needed.
- You should add also pieces of roundabout. In order to select a piece, you have to split the roundabout line using "Split a way in a selected node" (toolbar).
